Total Population: 4,000,000

Homeless Population: 58,000

The fourth most homeless city in the world is the “City of Angels” Los Angeles, California. Out of Los Angeles’s 4 million people, 58,000 do not have a roof over their head.

In Downtown Los Angeles there are 54 blocks that are filled with tents or makeshift structures where a portion of the city’s homeless population sleeps at night. This area is most commonly known as “skid row” (Martinez).

Los Angeles’ high rate of homelessness has risen by 75% in the past 6 years (Holland). There have been many different efforts to contain this quickly growing problem, for example the creation of homeless shelters and “containment policies” (Holland). Although homeless shelters do help by providing people with a roof over their head, there is just not enough room in Los Angeles to get the majority of people off the streets (Holland).
